Sandy

I didn’t think I would experience my first hurricane when I was two months old, but Hurricane Sandy had other plans for me. Mom took lots of pictures of me to keep calm as the storm approached and dad took down all of the outdoor fall décor so it wouldn’t fly around. The wind started picking up and I could tell mom and and were getting nervous and wouldn’t let me in my swing near the windows. I pretended like nothing was going on and put on a brave face so mom and dad could keep calm.

Mom tried to keep to my normal routine and got me ready for my usual 8:00 pm bath. But, around 7:40ish the power went out when mom was filling up my tub. She quick gave me a bath using a flashlight and wrapped me up in a long sleeved onesie, my fleece jammie jams, my fleece swaddle sack, and hat to keep warm. She put me in the hallway in my co-sleeper where no trees could reach me if they fell. I went to sleep by 10:00 pm and mom and dad went to sleep soon after. People told us the next day the winds got really bad during the night, but they slept through it until they woke up at 4:00 am. I woke up to a cold house with no electricity. But, Dad made a big fire in the morning and has kept it going since! He has waited in line for gas a few times this week to fill up the generator to keep the refrigerator cold during the day. We were lucky that no trees fell down during the hurricane, as many of our neighbors and friends had trees fall on their houses and cars.

Mom and I have spent the last few days in front of the warm fire, which I quite like. Having my bath at night by flashlight has certainly been different, but I am always up for an adventure. A friend lent us their space heater so Dad cranks up the heat on it in my room late at night before I go to sleep and we shut off the generator. She took a few pictures to pass the time and keep our spirits up.
We took a car ride to check out the boardwalk in Asbury Park. Most of it was fenced off, but we walked down the boardwalk near the dog beach.
I feel very lucky compared to all of the poor people who lost their house or their house flooded. We are so very lucky to have warm running water, a fireplace to keep warm, and a generator. I hope they rebuild the beaches and boardwalks so I get to experience all of the fun things mom and dad got to when they were kids. Only time will tell.
